Electric Vehicles using lead-acid batteries.
I still do not undertand why electric vehicles are not running in the mainstream yet. We had EV-1 and other automobiles running on lead-acid and doing pretty good. That was some 15 years ago, and it is quite obvious that with nowadays technologies they would be beating their ICE counterparts by now .
Conventionals are heavy and their KW/Kg ratio are not the best, but we could have vehicles with interchangeable containers filled with batteries which could be replaced by advanced ones whenever they grow up to become safe, recyclabe and price competitive.
There is a concept of many segments of vehicles which fulfill that specification, have adjustable suspension for the variations in weight, have zero turning radius and could run from coast to coast swapping power packs on the way.
Automated charging stations are also part of the project, they could be built in any gas station and do the swapping in a couple of seconds.

See my comments: Lead Acid is OK by me!
See my comments on modular batteries. could easily be prototyped with lead-acid batteries, but these would not be my first choice, as other types are also available with higher storage capacity per volume (note, weight about the same).
